Role of Electrolyte level in elderly people.

With age elderly people faces number of challenges.Electrolytic imbalance occurs balance has important role for proper nerve conduction in body.

Electrolytic balance easily gets disturbed in old age because there are number of age related changes which are taking place.

NORMAL SODIUM LEVEL

A normal sodium level should be around 140 milli equivalents/ litre.

CAUSE OF LOW SODIUM LEVEL

This level usually gets disturbed with less intake of water.High intake of medication in old age leads to reduction in water intake.

It is at this point that the patient caretaker who is with elderly should make proper chart of water intake and out.

SIGNS OF LOW SODIUM

Important sign which can easily be observed by patient caregiver that they can notice disorientation in patient behaviour. In some cases we have observed that patient experiences Hallucinations, they tend to forget things, low blood pressure n can also be seen.

INVESTIGATION

With change in patient behaviour important investigation of electrolytic balance like sodium and potassium level should be done.

PRECAUTIONS

Normal levels can be maintained by  giving electrolytic solution at regular intervals by trained medical attendant.

It is the duty of medical attendant that they should bring this in family notice immediately after observing such kind of change in behaviour.
