Digestive Problems in Elderly population.

The importance of digestive problems in old age cannot be understated.

The stomach is involved in the majority of diseases. The maintenance of digestive health is essential for overall wellness. While these issues can affect anyone at any age, a significant portion of seniors have one or more age-related digestive tract disorders.

The human body’s digestive system consists of the organs that break down food into its component parts for use by the body.

In old age, the gastrointestinal tract undergoes anatomical changes, and the possibility of diseases connected to it rises

Causes

An unhealthy, high-fat, unbalanced diet with little fresh vegetable and fruit content can cause crucial vitamin deficiencies in patients, leading to digestive problems.

These fatty diet meals can slow down the metabolic rate overall.

Fibre rich foods are stomach friendly and easily digest-able. like salads, vegetable soups.

Insufficient physical activity combined with a slower metabolism leads to weight gain and obesity, which in turn may cause many diseases.

Anti-inflammatory drugs can cause damage to the upper digestive tract in older adults, with the risk of gastric ulcers and stomach bleeding.. Even some common medicines can cause constipation.

In old age

Parkinson’s  disease:- whole body process and systems slows down leads to stomach problems.

Hypothyroidism:-Again this hormonal problems disturbs digestion.

Stroke

Intestinal obstructions from surgery, and diabetes can cause constipation.

Inadequate chewing of food and improper tooth brushing can both affect how well food is digested. 

Insufficient hydration and a low liquid intake can result in stomach issues.

Patient caretaker can make elders involvement in (walking, yoga, and other exercises of patient’s choice)

Medical attendant  must avoid products made with refined flour. 

Include  Iron, zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 supplements  in the patient’s regular diet.Our patient caretaker understands the importance of regular vitamin intake.

After eating, the patient shouldn’t lay down right away.

Try consuming smaller meals. 

Increase intake of juice and water.
