Tepid sponging is another name for cold sponging. It is only a way of cooling down the temperature by applying a wet liquid. Usually, cold sponging is done using a cloth.This damp clothing often absorbs body heat, evaporates, and lowers body temperature as a result.

Sponging a patient in fever is really helpful in controlling fever.We need to understand that sponging is not a treatment.It is a kind of temporary relief method.

What is the ideal duration of  Cold sponging? 

Maximum duration of this process is ideally  20 to 30 minutes .Extreme cold water is not recommended in this procedure, best is to lukewarm water.

What are the areas where we can do?

The best part to start is on forehead. We can simply apply wet clothes and put directly on forehead. There are other areas where it can be applied like neck, armpit and groin. 

What are the precautions while doing it? 

If during the procedure, patient is feeling cold, then it should be stopped immediately mediately.

Things to be keep in mind before Tepid  Sponging.

Patient care taker can ensure that their patient is not having any kind of skin sensation impairment.

Temporary numbness is common after doing  cold sponging ,but in cases where the numbness  lasts for more than one hour medical attendant should consult the doctor immediately.

Patient caregiver can keep a record of fever reading while doing it.Temperature normally come down in first 30 minutes.
