Muscle loss in older adults or the elderly population is very common. It is a normal ageing process which has to occur. The medical term used for the muscle loss is sarcopenia.

There are many after effects for this muscle loss. It may be physiological or psychological. Normally after the age of 33 3 to 8% of muscle mass decreases, but its intensity increases when the patient crosses 60.

Role of vitamins in sarcopenia.

In home healthcare we have seen one thing is common that the patients or the elderly who have muscle loss are deficient in vitamin D and calcium. These two vitamins are very important for building muscles. Strength of bones also depend on these two vitamins. Therefore our patient caretakers always recommend to get these type of investigations done 

What can be the effects of muscle loss in elderly? 

There will be definitely lack of strength. Patient may feel weak while doing the daily activities. 

Imbalance while walking is the other side effect, it cannot be ignored because loss of balance leads to risk of fracture. 

Low BP or orthostatic hypotension is other effect in which the BP of patient falls down quickly, whenever there is an attempt to standing directly from lying position.

  • Those who can walk without support, must try to use elastic bands or low weight dumbbells with their patient caretakers.
