Frequent urination in old age.How patient caretaker is helpful.

Frequent urination is very common in old age. The medical term used for frequent urination is Nocturia. This happens both with males and females. There are many reasons why there is frequent urination. In home health care we have observed that this thing can impact patients physically as well as psychologically. It is seen that due to frequent wake-ups, patients are not able to sleep properly, which results in dizziness and heavy headedness during the daytime. It becomes a challenging job for the patient Caretaker as well.

Reasons for Nocturia.

As a person grows older, the urinary bladder muscles become weak. They become less capable of holding urine, and this results in increased frequency of urine.

Another reason is ADH. ADH stands for antidiuretic hormone. With age the production of this hormone decreases. The main function of this hormone is to retain water, and due to its lower production, holding capacity reduces.

As a healthcare service provider we have seen that people who use CPAP machine at night for proper sleep tend to drink more water comparatively, more water results in frequent urination.

How can I stop frequent urination at night?

Patient caretakers can ensure that their elderly patients are not taking any caffeine products because it has a diuretic effect.

Medical attendants can counsel their patients that they have to avoid drinking water for at least 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.

Patient attendants must counsel their elders to take afternoon naps.

In some cases, we have observed that elevating the legs is very helpful, but at the same time, the patient caretaker should always look for a oedema and swelling over the lower limbs.
